Mothers’ Day in the UK this year is on 31st March.
The celebration dates back to 1600s in England. “Mothering” Sunday was celebrated annually on the fourth Sunday of Lent (the 40 day period leading up to Easter) to honour mothers. After a prayer service in church to honour Our Lady, children brought gifts and flowers to pay tribute to their own mothers.
Servants, apprentices and other employees living away from home were encouraged by their employers to visit their mothers and honour them.
Happy Mothers’Day to all the Mums in St Mary’s.
